Intercropping Maize and Beans Boost Crop Yields in Ethiopia.
Intercropping maize with beans at different planting dates in Ethiopia was studied to find the best time to plant beans for maximum benefits. The researchers tested planting beans with maize at the same time, 30 days after maize, and 60 days after maize. They found that planting beans 60 days after maize did not harm maize yield and increased bean yield. In both seasons, growing maize and beans together gave higher total yields than growing them separately. Overall, intercropping maize and beans was more beneficial than sole cropping, especially when beans were planted 60 days after maize in one season and at the same time in another season.
