Massive fault lines threaten coastal communities in Andaman and Sumatra.
The article discusses the complex structures at the boundary between the accretionary wedge and forearc basin in the Andaman to northern Sumatran margin. The researchers found that there are sliver faults dividing different geological features, with the West Andaman Fault in the north and Simeulue Fault in the south. A restraining step-over exists between these faults. The eastern margin of the accretionary wedge is formed by landward-vergent backthrusts rather than strike-slip faults. This study shows that the region has undergone strain partitioning, creating new deformation zones in the area.
