High-salinity soil treated with Na+ ions drastically improves water flow.
The researchers studied how salt levels in soil affect water flow in paddy fields. They used soil columns from high and low-salinity areas and found that high salt levels reduced water flow. When they removed sodium ions from the high-salinity soil, water flow increased significantly. Adding different amounts of salt back in showed that more salt decreased water flow slightly. This shows that sodium ions play a big role in how easily water moves through sandy soil.
