New maize hybrids show increased yield and reduced plant height.
The researchers studied different commercial maize hybrids to find the best ones for breeding programs. They tested 18 hybrids in two experiments and found that some hybrids had high yields while others had shorter plants. They identified specific hybrid combinations that were good for grain yield and recommended them for breeding programs. One hybrid, 30B39Y, showed the lowest negative effect of inbreeding on the analyzed traits.
