Newly Discovered Gene in Oil Palm Could Boost Biofuel Production!
Oil palm empty fruit bunches are used for biofuel, but lignin in the plant hinders biofuel production. Scientists isolated a gene called Eg4CL1 from oil palm, which is involved in making lignin. Eg4CL1 is active in all parts of the plant and at all growth stages, suggesting its role in lignin production. The gene's promoter also contains elements related to lignin production. Eg4CL1 is likely important for making lignin in oil palm.
