Study reveals how riverbed movement triggers massive sediment transport pulses
Mountain rivers experience large fluctuations in sediment transport rates due to bedform migration. In a lab experiment with a gravel bed, researchers found that bars moving downstream caused the most significant sediment transport pulses. Stable bar positions led to additional pulses from sediment transfer between pools. Bars stabilized the bed, while pools stored and transferred sediment. This study shows how different features in the riverbed work together to influence sediment transport.
