Apartment Complexes Evolve to Reflect Seoul's Unique Urban Landscape
The study looked at how commercial shops in apartment complexes in Seoul changed from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. In the beginning, shops were on the ground floor of buildings, but later they were built separately along the street or in the center of the complex. By the early 80s, commercial buildings moved to the edge of the complex. The type of buildings also changed to be more open to the street. This shift reflects how Seoul's urban structure places commercial buildings on the outskirts of blocks, with residential areas inside. Overall, commercial facilities in apartment complexes in Seoul evolved from a western model to a unique Korean style that fits the city's architectural and urban planning traditions.
