Steep slopes and heavy rain increase pollution in China's waterways
The study looked at how soil erosion and solutes move from soil into runoff water on slopes in China. They did experiments with different soil moisture levels, rainfall intensities, and slope angles. They found that more solutes are lost in runoff when there is more rainfall and steeper slopes. If water can soak into the soil before runoff, less solutes are lost. The amount of solutes in the runoff is related to how much solute is in the soil. Overall, the study shows that how water moves through soil affects how much pollution ends up in runoff water.
