Greenland Ice Sheet storing meltwater in solid ice, altering ice dynamics.
Surface meltwater in West Greenland can be stored within solid ice damaged by crevasses, extending down to 48 meters below the ice surface during summer. This stored water is released or refrozen during winter, affecting the ice dynamic response to surface meltwater. This newly observed hydrological component could delay the delivery of meltwater to the bed of the Greenland Ice Sheet, impacting ice flow through basal lubrication.
