Livestock research in Afghanistan leads to rural development proposals.
Livestock production in western Afghanistan was studied to understand the productivity of rangelands and the husbandry systems in place. Surveys were conducted in three areas covering 11,800 km2, revealing a human population of over 10,000 families and a large number of sheep and goats. The average stocking rate was 1·63 ha per ewe equivalent. This information was used to create proposals for integrated livestock and rural development.
