University Campus Wastes Profit by Disposing Recyclables and Compostables
This article focuses on characterizing and quantifying the solid waste generated at a university campus in Kenya. The researchers found that food waste makes up the largest portion of the total waste, with a significant amount of recyclable materials also being discarded. The university generates over 5,000 tons of mixed waste annually, including compostable food waste and various recyclables like paper, glass, plastic, and metals. Unfortunately, most of this waste is simply disposed of without any recycling or composting efforts. The study suggests practical recommendations for managing recyclables and compostable materials based on waste hierarchy principles, highlighting the potential for profit and environmental benefits if proper waste management strategies are implemented.
