Understanding how pollutants move in and out of western Lake Taihu's rivers is crucial for controlling pollution. Researchers studied the transport rates of various pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus in the area. They found that pollutants mainly enter the lake through Chengdong River and exit through Taipuhe River, Changdou River, and Daqian River. Pollutant input rates change with the seasons; nitrogen and phosphorus inputs decrease after flood season, while phosphorus and COD increase during floods. Chengdong River's nitrogen and phosphorus transport is influenced by concentration, unlike other rivers where flow rates matter more. Nearshore lake nitrogen levels are linked to river transport rates. Offshore lake pollution levels don't change much with river input rates.
