Altitude influences plant diversity in Western Himalaya's protected area.
The researchers studied how different plants are distributed at different altitudes in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in the Himalayas. They found a total of 324 plant species belonging to 92 families, with Asteraceae being the most common family. Trees were mostly found in clusters, while shrubs and herbs were spread out. As altitude increased, the number of plant species decreased. Altitudinal zones III and IV were most similar in terms of tree species, while zone V was different for herbs. The researchers concluded that climate and specific factors for each plant group influence the distribution of plant species with altitude.
