Severe Windstorms in Romanian Mountains Linked to Changing Climate Patterns.
Windstorms in the Apuseni Mountains in Romania on July 20, 2011 caused extensive damage to forests. The severe weather events were due to a shift in atmospheric circulation patterns, leading to the destabilization of warm, moist air masses and the formation of strong storms. The researchers analyzed synoptic processes using radar data and found that the transition from zonal to maritime tropical circulation played a key role in generating the destructive windthrows.
