New mining approach slashes accidents, boosts profits, and cuts emissions.
Coal mines in southwest China face safety issues due to closely-spaced outburst coal seams. A new method was developed to improve safety and increase coal and gas production. By coordinating gas extraction, roadway development, and coal mining, accidents decreased by 66.8%, coal-bed methane extraction efficiency increased, and greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
