Bioremediation Beats Mechanical Soil Replacement for Oil Cleanup, Saves Money and Environment
The study compared two methods for cleaning oil-contaminated soil: mechanical soil replacement and in situ bioremediation. Mechanical soil replacement is faster but more expensive, costing millions of rubles per hectare. In contrast, bioremediation takes longer but is cheaper and doesn't require hazardous waste disposal. Adding sorbents and ameliorants to bioremediation can improve its effectiveness, though it increases the cost.
