The goal of the research was to create 3D building models for smart cities using LiDAR data. The researchers developed a method to extract building points from the LiDAR data and generate detailed 3D models in CityGML format. They used both commercial and open source software to create the models. The results showed that the models produced with open source tools were just as good as those made with commercial software.
