New study reveals shocking environmental impact of Panamax bulk carriers
Seaborne transport is important, but ships' emissions need to be considered. A study used life cycle assessment to evaluate the environmental impacts of a Panamax bulk carrier from raw material extraction to shipbuilding. The study found that material extraction and production contribute most to carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions, while shipbuilding is responsible for volatile organic compounds, non-methane organic compounds, and particulate matter emissions. Material consumption has the biggest environmental impact. This research provides valuable information for assessing the environmental impact of ships in the future.
