Marine sediments play key role in removing harmful PCBs from water.
The researchers studied how certain chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) stick to marine sediments. They found that removing organic matter from the sediments made the PCBs stick less. This effect was more noticeable for PCBs with fewer chlorine atoms. When the sediments had more fine particles like silt and clay, the PCBs stuck more to the mineral particles.
