International exposure boosts productivity by substituting primary inputs for materials.
A new method was developed to analyze how companies produce goods when some factors affecting productivity are not directly observed. By looking at how firms minimize costs, researchers found a way to account for hidden differences in productivity. Their approach, tested on real-world data from Belgian manufacturers, revealed a strong connection between international trade and productivity. The study also showed that companies tend to use more materials instead of improving productivity directly.
