New Regulations Ensure Safer Waste Disposal and Environmental Protection
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was passed in 1976 to regulate solid and hazardous waste disposal. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversees this regulation, requiring proof from waste producers that their waste is not hazardous. EPA can also determine if waste is hazardous for other reasons. Transporter regulations focus on tracking waste and cleaning up spills. Generators of hazardous waste need an EPA Identification number to handle it. The Toxic Substances Control Act was created to address contamination issues like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) due to a lack of regulatory tools.
