Climate change models accurately predict cetacean abundance and distribution shifts.
Scientists studied how climate change affects the abundance and distribution of whales and dolphins in the California Current Ecosystem. They used data from 1991 to 2009 to create models predicting where these animals would be in 2014, a year with unusually warm ocean temperatures. The models accurately forecasted changes in the number of animals and where they were found. This shows that the models can predict how climate change will impact different species of whales and dolphins in the future.
