Corn waste transformed into sustainable biofuel, boosting energy security and reducing emissions.
Researchers have come up with a cost-effective method to make oil from corn stover, a type of plant material. They first treated the corn stover with a mix of ammonium carbonate and steam to remove a lot of the substances that get in the way. Then, they used enzymes to break down the leftover material into sugars efficiently. By working in a smarter way with enzymes, they achieved higher sugar conversion and more oil produced from the corn stover. With this approach, they were able to turn the plant material into useful lipids very effectively, showing that this method could be a great way to make oil from plant leftovers like corn stover.
