Wind turbine study reveals key factors impacting wind load dynamics
A wind tunnel study looked at how wind affects a model wind turbine in different conditions. Wind shear and turbulence intensity were tested to see how they impact the wind loads on the turbine. The study found that wind shear affects the average wind loads, while turbulence intensity affects the fatigue loads. The rotating rotor of the turbine contributes most to both types of loads. A stationary turbine can experience high wind loads compared to a rotating one. Changing the blade angle of a stationary turbine can alter wind loads by up to 15%.
