Revolutionary irrigation scheme slashes soil salinity, boosts crop yields in China
Soil salinity is a big problem for growing crops in dry areas like Hetao, China. This study used a computer model to see how salt levels in the soil will change over the next 10 years. They found that with some changes to how water is used for irrigation, the soil will become less salty and crops will grow better. By increasing water in the fall and decreasing it in the summer, the soil will be less salty and farmers will save water too. This means that in the future, farmers in Hetao can grow more food and use less water.
