New water treatment method improves safety but raises operational costs.
The AquaNES project looked at combining natural and engineered methods to clean drinking water. They studied using ultrafiltration after riverbank filtration, but found it can be expensive due to membrane fouling. They tested the water quality from both sources and found that a new method using inline electrolysis can remove manganese, improving water quality but also affecting costs. This study shows that while ultrafiltration provides safer water, it is more costly compared to open filtration methods.
