The article explores how developers of research software use metrics to improve software quality. They surveyed 129 developers and found that while they have a general understanding of metrics, they don't use them much. Performance and testing metrics are the most commonly used, but code complexity metrics are not widely utilized. Developers are interested in metrics but face challenges in implementing them effectively.
