Grassland Decline Threatens Ecosystem Stability on Chinese Loess Plateau.
Soil erosion on the Chinese Loess Plateau has been a big problem, but efforts to reduce it have changed the land use in the region. A study of a watershed on the plateau from 1978 to 2011 found that grassland was the main land type, with some changes over time. Grassland area decreased and then increased, while cropland and unused land also changed. Before 2000, grassland was often converted to cropland or unused land. After 2000, grassland decreased mainly due to changes in unused land and cropland. The land use in different time periods was either developing or adjusting/receding.
