Plastic film boosts wheat yields, transforming food security in drought-prone regions
The study looked at how controlling water and using plastic-film coverings in wheat fields can affect plant growth. They did this by planting wheat in fields with controlled water levels and with or without plastic-film covers. The experiments were done in China. The results showed that using plastic-film covers increased the amount of wheat produced. This increase was because the plants grew bigger. Both using plastic-film covers and watering the plants helped them grow more shoots called tillers. The plastic-film covers also made the plants produce more tillers that didn't have seeds.
