New study reveals highly selective fishing method threatens tuna populations.
A study looked at a type of fishing that targets albacore, yellowfin, and bigeye tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean. They found that the fishing method is very good at catching albacore tuna, with most of the catches being this type of tuna. Yellowfin tuna made up a small percentage of the catches, while bigeye tuna made up a bit more. The size of the fish caught increased with deeper depths, and the best depth for catching fish efficiently was around 167.57 meters. Using hooks at depths between 124 and 211 meters was found to be the most effective strategy. The fish caught were in good condition when captured, based on their relative condition factors.
