New study reveals how soil quality improves with agricultural management.
Soil structure and organic matter are important for soil health. A study in Germany looked at how these develop in farmland on recultivated land. They studied six plots with different ages of farming, from 0 to 24 years. They found that soil became denser in the first year but then loosened up after 6 years of farming. Carbon content in the soil increased over time, showing the beginning of a relationship between soil and living organisms. This study shows how soil changes over time with farming practices.
