Old buildings in the EU are very energy inefficient, leading to high energy consumption and CO2 emissions. By improving the energy efficiency of buildings, energy consumption could be reduced by 6%. Two important documents were published to increase energy efficiency: the Energy Performance of Building Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive. Energy performance certificates for buildings are a key outcome of these directives.
