Eucalyptus plantations in China reduce water drainage and increase streamflow.
Researchers studied how Eucalyptus plantations affect water balance in Guangxi, China. They found that in a dry year, the plantations used 71% of rainfall for evapotranspiration, while in an average year, they used 61%. The model they developed accurately predicted evapotranspiration based on soil water levels. Switching from grassland to Eucalyptus plantations could reduce drainage by 70 mm annually and increase months with zero flow by 5%.
