New labyrinth weirs reduce water levels and increase energy dissipation.
Weirs are important for irrigation projects, but their construction can have negative effects on water flow. By testing different shapes and dimensions of weirs, researchers found that labyrinth weirs with a crest angle of 60° are the best. These weirs reduce water levels and energy loss, while increasing discharge efficiency. Compared to linear weirs, labyrinth weirs have lower operating heads and longer crest lengths. The findings were confirmed using computer simulations.
