Soil density variations in China's farmland impact crop growth and yields.
Soil bulk density in Southwest China's agricultural area was studied to understand its variation and influencing factors. Surface soil had lower density than subsoil. Soil density patterns were similar throughout the soil profile, but varied in details. Soil organic matter was the main factor affecting soil density in all layers. Land use and elevation influenced density in specific layers, while soil type affected density below 40 cm depth.
