Beef's Climate Impact Depends on Greenhouse Gas Metric Used
This review looked at how greenhouse gas emissions from beef production are calculated and found that using just one measurement, like the common CO2 equivalent, might not show the full picture. Different gases, like methane and nitrous oxide, play a big role in emissions. By studying many farm systems, they found that detailed breakdowns of each gas's impact varied a lot. Comparing grass-fed and non-grass-fed beef, they noticed differences depending on the measurement used. While some trends were seen, more data is needed to really grasp the climate impacts of farming. The review calls for more studies to include breakdowns of individual gases to get a clearer understanding of greenhouse gas emissions in beef production.
