Chinese people willing to sacrifice pay for more equality, study finds.
China's people were studied to see if they prefer more equality in income. The researchers used a special experiment with Chinese students to mimic real-world situations. They found that most Chinese participants are willing to give up some money for a fairer distribution of earnings among others. This willingness is stronger when inequalities are random rather than based on performance. Comparing Chinese and American choices, China tends to have slightly higher preferences for redistribution when there is no direct cost involved. However, when there is a cost, Chinese preferences are slightly lower. Overall, Chinese people seem to prefer a more equal income distribution compared to other East Asian countries, possibly influenced by the Chinese Communist Party's control over education and media.
