Wind farms reduce local wind speed, impacting energy production and climate.
Wind farms can reduce wind speed in their vicinity, affecting the local environment. A study in Inner Mongolia found that wind energy is consumed by the wind farm, leading to decreased wind speeds within and downwind of the farm. The impact is greater in spring and autumn, with up to a 33% decrease in wind speed. However, the wind velocity profile remains unchanged, but the slope decreases, meaning wind speed doesn't increase as much with height. The presence of the wind farm also increases the roughness of the area it occupies.
