Billions of tons of clean coal recoverable from impounded waste.
The researchers studied coal impoundments in Alabama to find out how much coal is there and how much can be recovered. They also looked at the waste from coal processing going into these impoundments. They found that there are over 11 million tons of coal in these impoundments, and almost 5 million tons of clean coal can be recovered. They finished exploring 4 of these impoundments in the third quarter of 1981.
