Copper and E. coli laccase work together to break down a harmful chemical called TNT. By studying different strains of E. coli, scientists found that laccase levels affect the types of TNT breakdown products produced. These breakdown products were less toxic when laccase levels were lower. This shows that laccase activity is important for cleaning up TNT pollution.
