Deadly Virus Threatens Asian Aquaculture Industry, Devastating Freshwater Prawn Farms
Shrimp hemocyte iridescent virus (SHIV) was found to be the cause of 'white head' disease in farmed giant freshwater prawns. The researchers analyzed samples from infected prawns and other species, detecting SHIV in all samples. They observed SHIV particles in various tissues, with the highest load in the hematopoietic tissue. This study confirms that SHIV infects not only giant freshwater prawns but also other susceptible species like M. nipponense and Procambarus clarkii.
