Barrier islands are vulnerable to sea level rise, but we don't know how they will respond. The BRIE model simulates how barrier islands change over time, considering factors like sediment transport and inlet dynamics. The model shows that tidal inlets can behave in complex ways when faced with sea level rise and overwash. It also demonstrates that barrier islands can drown if sea level rises too quickly for them to adapt. Overall, the BRIE model helps us understand the long-term risks of flooding and erosion on barrier islands.
