Authoritative Criticism Weakens Loyalty to Attacked Groups, Reducing Bias
People tend to protect their social self-esteem from threats from their own group or outsiders. This study looked at how people react when their social self-esteem is threatened by an authoritative third party. The researchers found that when people received negative feedback from an authoritative source, they showed less favoritism towards their own group compared to when they received positive feedback or no feedback at all. This suggests that criticism from an authoritative figure can reduce bias towards one's own group.
