This article examines how Western missionaries in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties viewed Chinese languages, focusing on their records. The missionaries found it easier to learn the Manchu language compared to Chinese, suggesting cultural differences played a role. Many of them were proficient in both languages. Understanding their perspectives can provide valuable insights into language learning and cultural interactions during that time.
