Students in Indonesia struggle with informal inferential reasoning in statistics.
Informal inferential reasoning is important in learning, but not well studied in Indonesia. A study with 118 junior high school students in Mataram found that students struggle with understanding variability and distribution in data, but can identify significant differences between two sets of data. Some students made errors but still reached correct conclusions. The study suggests a new way to assess students' informal inferential reasoning by considering their ability to view data locally and globally.
