The aviation industry is looking for better ways to measure safety performance beyond just counting accidents. Current methods focus on outcomes like accidents and incidents, but these are rare compared to the number of flights. To improve safety, we need to also look at how safety processes are working. While there are some process metrics available, they haven't been widely adopted because it's unclear how well they actually reflect safety outcomes. More research is needed to test these process metrics and make sure they are reliable and useful for improving safety in aviation.
