Straw mulching boosts maize growth and reduces soil temperature for better yields.
A study looked at how using straw mulch and herbicides affects soil temperature, sunlight absorption, and growth stages of maize plants. Mulching with 9.0 t/ha of straw reduced soil temperature and helped maize plants intercept more sunlight, leading to faster growth. Using lower amounts of mulch also improved plant growth compared to no mulch. Different weed control methods didn't affect maize emergence, but using certain herbicides increased sunlight absorption and sped up plant growth stages.
