The article compares how public land is sold off in French and Italian cities during times of financial difficulty. By looking at different factors like government systems and local policies, the researchers found four types of urban austerity: gridlock, nationally controlled, locally controlled, and opportunistic. In French cities, public land sales are common and planned, while in Italian cities, they are more chaotic and temporary.
