It shows that without banks or government agencies providing credit, entrepreneurs' ability to borrow money depended on property rights and interest rates. The study focuses on Edam and De Zeevang in the 15th and 16th centuries, revealing that many households owned financial assets and debts, indicating a high level of financial knowledge among the population.
