Dangerous algae species found to inhibit growth of vital marine life.
The dinoflagellate Cochlodinium geminatum can stop the growth of other types of algae in the ocean. It was found in the Pearl River Estuary in China in 2011. The more C. geminatum there is, the more it can stop other algae from growing. Different parts of C. geminatum can all stop the growth of a specific type of algae called Akashiwo sanguinea. The best conditions for C. geminatum to stop other algae are at 25°C, with a certain amount of salt in the water, and with a certain amount of light. This shows that C. geminatum can take over the ocean by stopping other algae from growing, and this is affected by the environment.
